The plane carrying a college football team, assorted faculty and student volunteers crashes in the Himalayas. A small group of survivors is forced to endure freezing temperatures, starvation, and a yeti beast that wants to kill and eat them.
Yeti is a pretty average b-grade horror flick. It would have received a two star rating were it not for several key points.
Point one: A man breaks his leg, uses the dismembered arm of his fallen comrade as a splint and then climbs the side of a cliff. That is so ridiculous, it couldn’t be anything but hilarious. Seriously, who doesn’t like laughter?
Point two: Speaking of laughter – the acting, dialogue, and CGI were all very funny in places. Funny enough that it almost makes up for the time between laughs. If you watch Yeti and don’t laugh when the CGI Yeti starts running and jumping, you might be okay. But if the costumed actor Yeti running doesn’t get a chuckle (even if it is accompanied by a groan), then there might be cause for concern.
Point three: The cheese. At its core this movie has a pretty decent plot. A group of survivors survive in conditions unknown. Now add a generous helping of cheddar and you have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
Where did it fail? Yeti does seem self-aware of its place in cinema history, yet the laughs and silliness are few and far between. Too much of Yeti’s running time is spent on the basic survival aspect and nowhere near enough time on the interaction between the survivors and the titular character.
Overall, Yeti is worth checking out if you have the opportunity and you enjoy bad horror movies. I wouldn’t think there are enough consistent laughs throughout Yeti to entertain viewers without a deep enjoyment of b-grade bliss. However, if you are willing to stick with Yeti throughout its peaks and valleys, you’re in for some terribawesome treats.
