It’s her last day on the job, but when homicide detective Sarah Linden (Enos) discovers the body of a teenage girl, she is pulled back in to solve one last case with former narc Stephen Holder (Kinnaman).

If season one is any indication, The Killing is a sharp and gritty crime drama with a murder mystery that feels real.

I watch a lot of Criminal Minds and NCIS so I’m used to a bit of comedy between crime scenes. The vibe of The Killing is completely different, but still engaging.

The character development in season one of The Killing is brilliantly written. Characters that I felt were shady early on were redeemed, while characters who originally seemed affable had their shady past revealed. Other characters simply evolve in a way that is fascinating to watch.

The story is well put together, with plenty of false leads and hard police work being shown on screen. While I am more accustomed to having the killer bagged and charged in under 50 minutes, the long form of this drama only feels tedious on a few occasions and always picks back up.

If you enjoy serious crime dramas that extend beyond the usual one or two episode arc, then The Killing is definitely worth checking out. I, for one, can’t wait to get stuck into the second season.
