When ex-Major Jack Reacher (Cruise) finds out that his ally Major Susan Turner (Smulders) has been framed and arrested for espionage, he puts himself in the firing line to prove her innocence.
Sometimes the only thing you need to make a day perfect is some popcorn, an ice cold drink and a fast-paced action flick. At those times, I cannot recommend Jack Reacher: Never Go Back enough.
I hadn’t seen the first Jack Reacher film before seeing Jack Reacher: Never Go Back nor had I read any of the novels by Lee Child on which the films are based. Regardless of these oversights, I had no trouble following any aspect of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
The story is smart but not overly complex which is the formula I feel works best for action movies. You don’t want there to be absolutely no plot — you may as well just watch wrestling — but you also don’t want a plot that is so serious and realistic that the crazy gun fights and explosions seem out of place.
Tom Cruise is great in his role as the eponymous action hero. I think Cruise has evolved into a fantastic actor from the kid who danced around in his underwear to Bob Seger. In Jack Reacher: Never Go Back I noticed the intricacies of Cruise’s acting more than I ever have before. Things like a minute facial movement that lasted less than a second yet conveyed several emotions at once. While his performance in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is unlikely to win him an Academy Award, it was delightfully fun to watch.
Cobie Smulders is another actor who I feel has come far from her first well-known role — the character of Robin on How I Met Your Mother. Her skills at portraying an action heroine in her own right are well showcased in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back as her Susan Turner matches stride with Cruise’s Reacher.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is a smart action movie with a good plot and plenty of great gun fights, fabulous fist fights and enormous explosions. Everything you want in a modern action film.
